BONE GRAFT & SINUS LIFT

Some conditions that lead to tooth loss (periodontal disease, trauma, gum disease, etc.) also tend to diminish the quality and quantity of jaw bone tissue. Therefore, if you are missing teeth, there is a good chance that you are also suffering from loss of bone tissue around the tooth sockets. If you are preparing for dental implants and have been informed that you require a bone graft or sinus lift, the Solon, Ohio, team at Carpe Diem Dental Spa is here to help you understand these treatments and why they are recommended. Read on to learn more about how and why bone grafts and sinus lifts are sometimes performed alongside dental implant and All-on-4 implant procedures.

What is a Dental Bone Graft?

A dental bone graft uses bone tissue to build up the volume and density of bone material in the jaw bone. Bone grafts can come from the patient’s tissue, synthetic sources, animal tissue, or human tissue banks. The most common types of bone grafts used in dentistry include:

  • Autografts. An autograft, or autogenous tissue graft, is tissue that comes from a patient’s own body. For dental autografts, the tissue is usually sourced from tuberosity tissue at the back of the jaw bone since this area is rich in ”stem” (osteoprogenitor) cells. Although, autografts can be sourced from several locations throughout the body.

  • Allografts. Allografts are derived from tissue stored at a human tissue bank. These tissues are ethically harvested and tested according to clinical safety guidelines.

  • Xenografts. Xenografts come from a non-human animal source, typically bovine or porcine bone.

  • Synthetic bone grafts. Synthetic bone grafts are crafted in a laboratory using varying matrices of hydroxyapatite and calcium sulfate.

In contrast to sinus lifts, it’s not uncommon for bone graft particulates to be placed at the same time as dental implants, especially in cases where there are buccal wall defects or deficits in bone volume and/or density

Are Dental Bone Grafts Painful?

Previously, the process of harvesting autogenous bone tissue — that is, taking tissue from a patient’s own body — was slightly painful as it was harvested from a patient’s chin bone. Now, autogenous tissue is taken from the tuberosity bone at the back of the jaw bone. A local anesthetic is used before the procedure and a majority of patients report only feeling a slight bit of discomfort.

Why Sinus Lift ?

SINUS LIFT SURGERY

When you see the word sinus, you likely assume that it has something to do with the area around the nose. But, the sinus bone, is located above your molars and premolars. Sinus lift surgery, sometimes referred to as sinus augmentation, is a procedure that adds bone tissue to the upper jaw (maxilla). Sinus lifts are generally performed when there is insufficient bone material within the upper jaw to support a dental implant.

When is a Sinus Lift Necessary?

Sinus lifts are typically performed to increase the height of bone tissue in the upper jaw, or when it is determined the maxillary sinus cavity is too close to the jaw. Commonly, sinus lifts are necessary in cases of significant bone loss resulting from one or several of the following conditions:

  • Tooth loss in the upper jaw

  • Periodontal disease

  • Jaw bone resorption after tooth loss

Dense, healthy bone tissue is essential to achieving implant stability, which in turn helps ensure long-term implant success. If a sinus lift has been recommended to you, the Carpe Diem Dental Spa team is available to answer all of your questions related to this and other procedures.

Healing Time After Sinus Lift Surgery

Some degree of discomfort and inflammation are to be expected in the days following a sinus lift procedure. You may also notice some spot bleeding from the mouth or nose. It is recommended that you do not blow your nose or sniff aggressively for two to four weeks following the procedure, doing so may disrupt the graft and cause it to shift. We recommend taking a decongestant during your healing period. If you are someone who sneezes often due to allergies, you may want to consider using an allergy medication in the weeks following the procedure. In rare cases, the graft can fail due to a sinus infection (sinusitis), therefore you should be extra vigilant in protecting your health in the months following a sinus lift procedure.

Once a sinus lift has been performed it usually takes anywhere from 4 to 12 months before the tissue is stable enough to place dental implants.
